The Invitation to the 4th International Taijiquan Exchange Competition, Jiaozuo, China
In order to develop Taiji culture, promote the international Taiji academic exchanges, make new friends and make progress, the
4th International Taijiquan Exchange Competition in Jiaozuo, China will be held from August
, 2008 in Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, China, the birthplace of Chen Style Taijiquan. The competition is organized by the Chinese Wushu Association, and undertaken by the Henan Provincial Sports Bureau and the Municipal Government of Jiaozuo City. During the competition, there will be various activities, such as the grand opening ceremony, Taijiquan contests, lectures on Taijiquan and assessment of papers, performances of different styles of Taijiquan presented by well-known masters and so on. The people of Jiaozuo are friendly and hospitable. We will be honored to have your presence along with your team and friends.

Notice: Various Taijiquan performances will be given and Taijiquan will be taught for free from August on the outdoor basketball field in the north of Jiaozuo Stadium.

V.Competition Events
1.Compulsory routines:
Four Styles of Taijiquan(Chen style,Yang style,Wu2 style,Sun style),Wu3 Style of Taijiquan and Taijiquan Competition Routine(42 forms)and The Simplified Taijiquan(24 forms),Taijijian Competition Routine(42 forms)
2.Traditional routines:
Different routines of Taijiquan which are not compulsory routines and 24 forms Taijiqnan,such as Chen style,Yang style,Wu2 style,Sun style,Wu3 style and other traditional styles as well as different routines of Taiji apparatus.Athletes of the same Taijiquan style and apparatus are grouped together;if the number of athletes who take part in each style and each apparatus is less than 5.these athletes will be put together into other groups of a different kind.
3.Team events:
Each team shall be composed of 5—10 athletes(men or women).Either Taijiquan,Taiji apparatus or Taijiquan mixed with Taiji apparatus are acceptable.Background music is allowed in the course of the performance fthe tape is self—provided).
4.Taiji Push Hands Arena Contest
1)Three categories for female athletes:
Below 55 kilograms category(including 55 kilograms)
60 kilograms category(55—60 kilograms)
Over 60 kilograms category
2)Eight categories for male athletes:Below 52 kilograms category(including 52 kilogr:,ms)
56 kilograms category(52—56 kilograms)
60 kilograms category(56—60 kilograms)
65 kilograms category(60—65 kilograms)
70 kilograms category(65—70 kilograms)
75 kilograms category(70—75 kilograms)
80 kilograms category(75—80 kilograms)
Over 80 kilograms category
VI.How to participate in the contest
1.Each team may enter a team leader,a coach,a doctor and there is no limit to the number of the athletes(whether men or women).
2.An athlete who intends to participate in the contests of compulsory routines and traditional routines can enter for 2 events at most (one is for Taijiquan and the other is for apparatuses).Each team Call participate in only one team event.
3.In the push hands competition,only one athlete from each team is allowed to enter for each category.And one athlete can only enter for one category.The athletes for push hands must enter for Taijiquan contests oror enter for the Taijiquan test.
4.When registering,each participant for push hands contests must hand in his or her life insurance certificate and health certificate endorsed bv hes.

VII.How to contest
1.There are two kinds of contests:individual events and team events.
2.The contests of compulsory i'outines and traditional routines are to be judged respectively according to The Rules of International Wushu Competition endorsed by the International Wushu Federation in 1 999.
3.Competition time for routines:
1)Compulsory routines:Chen style,Yang style,Wu2 style,Sun style,Routines of Wu3 Styles of Taijiquan and Routines of Taijiquan for Contests (42 forms)(5—6 minutes for all the above);The Simplified Taijiquan (24 forms)(4—5 minutes);Routines of Taiji Sword Contest(42 forms)
(3—4 minutes)
2)Traditional routines:different routines of Taijiquan and traditional styles(4—5 minutes);the athletes have 3—4 minutes for Taiji Sword contest and the time for those using other apparatuses cannot be less than 1 minute 30 seconds一一4 minutes. 3)Competition time for team events(3—5 minutes)
4.The contests of push hands are to be judged according to the newly constituted Rules for Push Hands Contests by the International Taijiquan Exchange Competition,Jiaozuo,China(see the attachment),which is a tryout and only applicable to this Taijiquan conmpetition.
5.In the contests of push hands the single knock out system is adopted.If the athletes abstain from the game without reason,he or she shall be disqualified and all the scores he has achieved will be cancelled.
VIII.Places and Awards
1.The first eight contestants will be awarded in the individual event of compulsory routines contests,and men contestants and women contestants will be awarded respectively according to the age groups.The first eight teams will be awarded respectively in the team contests of Taijiquan,Taiji Apparatus and Taijiquan mixed with Taijj Apparatus。If the number of contestants or teams is less than 9.one fewer contestants or teams will be awarded.If there is only one contestant or team,the contestant or team shall not be awarded.The contestants or teams who have not entered the first eight shall be awarded for the third prize
2.1/5 of the contestants who participate in the traditional routine events shall be awarded for the first prize and 2/5 for the second prize and all the others shall be awarded for the third prize.Men contestants and women contestants will be awarded respectively according to the age groups.
3.The first eight men athletes and women athletes will be awarded respectively according to the age groups in the contests of push hands.If the number of contestants in each class is less than 9.the last will not be awarded.If there is only one contestant or team.the contestant or team shall not be awarded.
IX.Registration
1.Before July 20,2006,each group or team is requested to send the following to the Contest
a.Two copies of registration form(printed in A4 paper size),
b.Two current photos(as used for passports)of each contestant with names on the back;
c.A copy of each contestant’s passport as age proof;
2.When registering,each athlete must hand in his or her proof endorsed by the member federations of the International Wushu Federation of the country or region; if the member federations of the Internation~.Wushu Federation don’t register until July 20,2006,the registration from other local Wushu organizations belonging to this area will be acccpted by the Organizing Committee.
3.Each team should check in at the Contest Department in Shanyang Hotel,Jiaozuo,Henan Province,China on August 19,2006.
X.Budget
1.Entry fee:Each person is charged US$45 for one day(standard room in 3 star hotel),US$60(standard single room in 3 star hotel),US$55(standard room in 4 star hotel),US$70(standard single loom in 4一star hotel),covering the expenses of board and lodge,contests and other activities arranged by the Organizing Committee.
2.The participating teams from the member federations of the International Wushu Federation are exempted from the registration fee.
3.Each contestant from any team that doesn’t belong to International Wushu Federation is charged US$10 as registration fee.
4.Each team that participates in contests had better transact life insurance on its own.
Regulations of Push Hands for the
4th International Taijiquan Exchange Competition, Jiaozuo, China,
I. Principles of Competition
1. The following principles should be carried out: "Lure the opponent's advance into emptiness; harmonize with him, then issue power. Adhere, join, stick to and follow the opponent, without letting go or resisting." "One should never use stiff, forceful energy to attack." 2. The contestant should adopt the principles of
"Peng" (Ward off), "Lu" (Roll back), "Ji" (Push) ,"An" (Press),
"Cai" (Pull down), "Lie" (Split),. "Zhou"(Elbow), "Kao" (Shoulder stroke) to make his opponent lose his balance and therefore fall down or be knocked off the platform.3. One can use his palms to make a sudden
attack.II. Action
1. Starting: Opponents face each other and each places the right foot on the centre mark. When prepared to begin, they make contact with the back of the right wrist. In the second round, opponents each place the left foot on the centre mark and they make contact with the back of the left wrist. The referee gives the command to begin, at which the competitors are required to perform a minimum of two full revolutions (first anti-clockwise and then clockwise) before initiating any techniques.
2. Target areas: Attacks may be made within restricted areas of the body: from below the base of the neck to above the coccyx or bladder area and the arms.
3. Competitors may use foot techniques beneath the opponent's anklebone.
III. Points
The contestant who knocks the opponent down using hand or foot techniques shall be awarded 5 points. The contestant, who attacks with hand or foot techniques, thus forcing the opponent to fall and rise immediately, shall be awarded 3 points. The contestant who knocks the opponent off the platform or out of the playing field using obvious hand or foot techniques shall be awarded 5 points. The contestant who pushes the opponent off the platform or out of the playing field shall be awarded 1 point. No points shall be awarded to either contestant if they both fall down simultaneously. If the contestants fall one after the other, the one who falls after the opponent shall be awarded 1 point. IV. Principles of Penalty
1. Personal Violations:1) Using stiff, forceful energy to attack
2) Putting both hands beyond the sides of the opponent
3) Purposely causing the opponent to foul
4) Grabbing the opponent or grabbing the opponent's clothes
5) Attacking before the judge starts the round with verbal or hand signals, or attacking after the judge stops the round with verbal or hand signals
6) Attacking before completing the two full revolutions
7) Receiving coaching during the round
A warning is issued for each Personal Violation and every time the contestant is warned, the opponent shall be awarded 0.5 point. If the contestant is warned six times, the opponent wins.
2. Serious Personal Violations:
1) Striking, hitting, punching, using head to attack, CHIN NA (catching and grappling), pulling hair or beard, elbowing, attacking pressure points, attacking groin area or gripping the throat, etc
2) Attacking any part of body excluded in the Target Area
3) Being rude to the judge or not following instructions of the judge
A serious warning is issued for each Serious Personal Violation and every time the contestant is seriously warned, the opponent shall be awarded 1 point. If the contestant is seriously warned three times, the opponent wins.
3. A competitor may be disqualified for one of the following Serious Violations
1) Reviling scornfully, laying siege to or humiliating judges on the filed 2) Intentionally attacking the opponent's parts of body that are strictly forbidden to be
attacked.V. Scoring Criteria
1. The contestant shall win if he or she has 20 points more than the opponent in a bout.2. The contestant shall win if he or she is injured due to the opponent's foul and therefore cannot continue to contest.3. If one contestant is injured and cannot continue to contest, the opponent shall win.4. If one contestant or the coach abstains from the contest, the opponent shall win.5. At the end of the contest, the contestant who gets more points shall win.6. If the points they get are the same, the one who gets higher scores in the competition of Taijiquan shall win.7. If the points are still the same, the one whose weight is less shall win.8. If still the same, the one who gets fewer warnings and/or serious warning shall win.9. If still the same, more rounds shall be added until one
wins.VI. Other requirements of push hands contests shall be implemented according to the regulations of
Taijiquan, stipulated by State Sport General Administration.
